...but, how much monthly profit do you make (after your expenses)? How many cakes do you do a month? And what size(s) cakes are those? Just on average. Just wondering??

I make 2-3 wedding cakes per week and had 6 occasion orders but share that with my daughter. I make enough to pay the bills and buy equipment and supplies. I always have a positive balance in my acct. but I just started in Feb. I figure it may take about a 1yr before I see any money. It seems like I always need something or run out of things.

I'm in it for a hobby, not profit at this point. I have seen very little money for the cakes I do do to the fact that I turn all of my money back into my hobby so that I can expand my knowledge. Will I ever do it for profit? One day, my husband hopes, but right now it's fun to hear my kids brag on me about my hobby.

It's just a side job. My hubby works full time, I'm a stay-at-home mom, and loved to decorate cakes for friends and family. My friends were telling to go on business with that for about a year when I finally decided to jump and do it. It's legal here to bake from home and sell, so I got every license and started my business. I don't do much right now because it's a small town (less than 8000) and already have a lady that does the same as I do, but is getting old so she refuses jobs, and also have a local bakery that does cakes. So I do a few cakes a month, around 4-5 (Especially during winter since I have a contract with the bowling alley) didn't got any wedding orders yet, but I was able to make publicity only in April when I got legal so almost everyone had their cakes ordered. Next year might be my first great year. I sell scrapbooking supplies on Ebay also, so that pays my cake decorating supplies.... And I practice my cakes with my kids, they love that!!!!!

HTH

I work a full time job (in the IT field, so its a 50 hour a week job) and am burnt out on the IT field. Since I am close to retirement age and will never be able to retire (cost of living is too high) I decided to do what friends and family have been telling me to do for years...bake for money (I also am one hell of a bread baker, but I decided to go with cakes instead..) I gave myself two years to see if I can make enough money to quit the IT field and do this full time until my body gives out ( Crying or Very sad )

I became fully licensed, legal, yada yada yada last January. I am now doing an average of 3-5 cakes a week and turning down usually 2 a week (those monday afternoon calls..not enough notice for me when I have a full time job) and have done 4 weddings and 3 more to go. (My business plan didn't call for a large wedding business my first year. I am going to work on that more next year if things go well) At the beginning, I made no money, as I was putting it all back into supplies. Supplies have also gotten cheaper for me now as i have found resources to get them cheaper, got some business accounts to get things at costs, etc. Am I making a profit? Yes, but not enough to live on. I made enough to pay for a weeks vacation back in June, where we went camping. Paid for all the food, the campground and side trips. I always also have a positive balance in my account and haven't had to touch household money. But I haven't figured out exactly how much I have made yet, as I just don't have time. I got so far behind in my receipts, my DH is now taking over my business side, so I can work on cakes.

I have to tell you, I am blown away at the responses from people! What we do is VERY unusual!!! Not everyone wants a sheet cake from walmart with a plastic teddy bear stuck it for their birthday celebrations!
