Try dusting them with a dry paintbrush and Super Pearl dusting powder. It will make them look more even, but it will also add a bit of pearly shine, not sure if that is what you want. I don't use cornstarch sprinkled on the board when rolling gumpaste. I lightly grease the board with a bit of crisco, wipe it with a paper towel and then roll. If you feel you have to use cornstarch look in the disposible diaper area of your grocery store for diaper liners, put a small amount of cornstarch in the middle of the liner, gather up the top and secure it with a rubber band wrapped tightly at the top. Then you can just pounce it on your rolling board like you would a powder puff on your face. You don't need a lot of cornstarch to prevent sticking, it just makes too thick a coating on your paste and you end up with the problem you are having now. |

The cake is beautiful!!! Maybe a bronze luster dust on the shoes--it would still coordinate with the color scheme, and bronzed baby shoes are such a cliche that nobody would question why the shoes are shiny...just a thought. Good luck! |

I think the dust makes them look a bit "suede-ish". You probably don't think the same, but you could try dry dusting them, or brush them with water - that'll make them glossy (not sure if that's what u want) and get rid of the cornstarch. |

Well, I don't know if I am "Dingy" as in dull, or "Dingy" as in airhead, but I didn't even notice the link to your cake and thought you were speaking of white shoes. No, don't use super pearl on these, try dusting them with Cocoa Brown petal dust and if you don't have that you can try just regular cocoa powder. But if you use cocoa powder, after dusting them, tap them gently on the counter to remove the excess powder and then blow on them. Otherwise the cocoa would come off on your icing. |

Whenever I use chocolate fondant, I use cocoa powder instead of cornstarch when rolling out maybe the same for brown gumpaste?
I think you cake is sooo cute. Your shoes turned out just wonderful!
