I have been asked to make a witch's hat for a client. The top of the hat is going to be a foam cone for added support. I am not sure how to cover it all with fondant without it ripping on top. Does anyone have pointers on how to attempt this?

Let me state up front that I have never tried this. What I would first attempt it wrapping the fondant around the cone, not over. I would cut the fondant in a shape similar to the shape you would if covering a lampshade - narrow at one and wider that the other. HTH!

I have covered 3 cones. You dont cover it by going over it like a cake you would do what tracycakes said and wrap it around the cone. I made my fondant pretty thick. Roll out your fondant and lay the cone down. Kinda measure by lifting the fondant around the cone. Then cut the general shape out. It should have a point at one end. You will have a seam. Make that the back of the hat. If you are adding other decorations you can cover most of the seam with those. I hope this helps.

I believe our CCer Jamie covered a cone. I would also suggest the wrap method.

I have covered a cone with fondant. I made a thin rope out of the fondant, wrapped it around the cone several times and then smoothed it out with my fingers. It went pretty fast and I was pleased with the results. I made a castle cake for my grandchildren. You can see it in my photos. HTH
