I would like to enter a cake into our local fair. This would be the first time I have done this. The fair is in September and the theme is Rock Around The Clock. I can not decide if I want to do a novelty cake, or a wedding cake. The main question that I had was, for those of you who have done cakes for the fair, do you try to stick with the theme or do your own thing?? If I were to try a wedding cake, would I carry out the theme on it??? I am going to be getting some cake dummies to try out some of the designs that I have come up with so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

If they don't have a separate category for the fair theme, then I would think that they want all the categories to reflect the theme. That sounds like a fun theme....

I agree with bdkcakes. If they don't have specific cake categories, then I would assume they mean for all cakes to use the theme somehow.

Since you asked... Very Happy

WEDDING
3 tiers round (floating or separate) - the top of the cakes would be like a record album, with the label in the middle; a juke box & a couple dressed in the 50's style for the topper

NOVELTY
a 3-D jukebox or record player

WOW! We must think alike. I was thinking of doing a record player with a record cover from the fifties made of fondant/gumpaste proped up on the side, and possibly some saddle oxford shoes next to it.

For the wedding cake, I was thinking of decorating it in the black, pink, and white colors, with a juke box as a topper and a bride and groom dancing around the cake.

What do you think of these ideas?? I have never done a cake for the fair but friends have suggested that I do it. I could always use some practice.
