If the buttercream doesn't work out, you might try rolled buttercream (the recipe is on this site). My family refuses to eat fondant but they will eat the rolled buttercream.

This was my son's grooms cake. It is covered in rolled buttercream. I thought it turned out well and I was especially proud of it.
