I want to pipe a plaid design on a cake, but can't remember how to measure around the cake first. I know that it's an exact thing, or else the design will be uneven. Does anyone know how to do this?

I just got my first set of dummies in from d a l l a s f o a m .com in the mail yesterday, and I am psyched to use them. I'm going to use the plastic wrap method, then ice it and cover it in fondant.
