amiegirl...you can use plain old wilton gumpaste...no one will be eating it anyway and it holds up really well. Buy it at hobby lobby/michael's with a coupon and you're all ready to start!!!!

I have decorated with it with no problem. Stars, reg type stuff no problem. Anything that would require something stiffer, I agree with vdrsolo...use buttercream.

I have used "double satin" ribbon before. Both sides feel satiny. It was white on white though so I don't know if having a color would make a difference.
