The Rise of the Whale

The Rise of the Whale By amago
Sponge Cake with toffee filling. Inspired by the cover of the music cd [from] Mastodon. Everything is edible.

I absolutely adore everything about this album cover-inspired cake by amago, the imagery of which is based on Mastadon’s 2004 album, Leviathan, and of course, Melville’s Moby-Dick. The cake has such great movement and balance, and the painted details are all very well done.

Another fantastic cake by one of my favorite cake decorators, Sifbeth (gefion). She created this overpiped, Borella-inspired royal icing design using her signature marbled colors as a base. She also gets extra points for choosing such a fantastic shade of purple.

Nautical First Birthday Cake
Nautical First Birthday Cake By smash-cakery
All fondant with fondant and gumpaste figurines- used the wave tutorial that Lesley with Royal Bakery posted on Craftsy, to create the wave “movement” effect. Super easy, but the effect took a while. Off to deliver this bad boy! :)

Smash-cakery’s waves remind me of the beach— exactly where I want to be right now. I love that I can see the personality of the starfish and the whale. I think we would be friends!

The Mad Hatter's tea party

The Mad Hatter’s tea party By christadelaine

I’ve thrown a couple of tea parties for friends before, but none of them were as cute as this one! Christadelaine did an amazing job including so many tiny, delightful details on this cake.

Pirate Topsy Turvy Cake
Pirate Topsy Turvy Cake By cece327
Pirate Topsy Turvy 1st Birthday Cake. The Pirate ship is also carved cake and covered in fondant. The sails are made from gumpaste. Too many fun elements on this cake, I had sooo much fun making it.

This topsy turvy pirate cake by cece327 is absolutely adorable! There are so many fun elements on this cheerful birthday cake, from the ombre ruffle waves to the gumpaste elephant sailor, but I especially love the color scheme of the tiered cakes.

Solociachef21 deserves praise for this incredible sculpted dragon cake. The airbrushing and texture work are spot-on, and the suspension of the flames and wings speaks to this cakemaker’s ingenuity. So creative.
