Delicate wafer paper is an under-appreciated decorating medium when it comes to cakes. Both inexpensive and versatile, wafer paper is the perfect choice for fluttering butterflies, soft feathers and dreamy blossoms. To help inspire you, here are some of the most popular cakes featuring wafer paper decorations!
Hand cut 6.5 inch diameter from wafer paper and frosting sheet.
This is a cake I recently entered into a local cake competition. The masks are gumpaste and the feathers are made from wafer paper. I have a tutorial on my website blog if you’re interested in making the feathers. TFL!
Done for Cake Central magazine. Wafer paper fantasy flowers and vines, brushed chocolate finish, edible image custom tiara, gumpaste numbers. Non-edible bling.
Petals made from wafer paper and then cut out and a centre made from fondant attached.Printed frosting sheet cut to make edible ribbons.
Six inches across from wafer paper and dragees.
This was an experiment to see if I could recreate the unusual ‘feathers’ wedding cakes I’ve seen. 10″, 7″ and 4″ polystyrene dummies covered with sugarpate and hand-cut wafer paper for decoration, then sprayed with pearl lustre. Not entirely happy with it…. I think I’ll try again in the future, but with 4 or 5 tiers and only 2″ difference between the tiers, not 3″ like I’ve used this time. But the overall effect isn’t bad.
6 & 10″ square tiers with wafer paper butterflies made using the method posted in CC’s articles. I used the patterns from WBH for their chocolate butterflies. They were so much fun and looked so real! In the wind (outdoor wedding) their wings were actually moving and a couple “flew” off the cake while I was setting up. Thanks for looking!
9 inch WVAC cake, covered in MMF, dusted with pearl dust. Fondant bow. The butterflies are wafer paper, painted with luster dust and edible glitter. I made this to donate to a fundraiser tomorrow night.
Handpainted flowers with detailed edges, m&m center. Leaves are also wafer paper. Devil’s Food with espresso BC and dark chocolate ganache. Chocolate fondant fern coils.
Lotus flower and lilly pad are waferpaper (rice paper) painted with cocoa butter. Frog is fondant, gum paste and royal icing painted with cocoa butter. Fish are reverse painted on the inside of glass with cocoa butter. Pebbles are molecular gastronomy caviar.
