Step 1:

Roll out some black fondant or gum paste and cut out a fan-like shape (or a steep triangle with the finest tip sliced off) to make the middle panel of your art deco-inspired motif!

Step 2:

Roll out some white fondant or gum paste (or light tan/ochre if you’re not covering this panel with edible gold leaf) and cut into a fatter triangle than your black central panel. Slice off the middle pointed tip.

Step 3:

To cover with edible gold leaf you need to work insanely gently. Before you transfer your gold leaf lightly and evenly wet your fondant piece with a tiny amount of edible glue… remember the outer edges too! You can pick up each top corner with dry fingers or use two cake decorating assigned tweezers. Lay carefully over your fondant panel and brush lightly with a large soft brush.

Top tip alert!

Also, close any doors or windows that may be letting in a draft as even the tiniest wisp of wind will mangle up your pricey golf leaf rendering it almost unusable.

Step 4:

Arrange each panel so that the black sits on top and in the middle of the larger gold. Attach with some edible glue or royal icing.

Step 5:

Roll out your light tan or ochre fondant or gum paste and cut out an even wider triangle shape. Again, slice off the tip. Dust with edible gold luster dust.

You can even add a little intrigue and texture by lightly scouring the fondant or gum paste shape’s surface with a veining tool, use a moc-roc embossing pin for some fashion influence or add edible pearls around the shape’s edge for some showbiz appeal!

Step 6:

Now attach this larger panel underneath with some edible glue or royal icing. Leave the full piece to set and harden before pressing into a buttercream piped cupcake!

If you need to adapt these glam cupcake toppers for birthdays or weddings you can always utilize different colors such as silver instead of gold, add some texture to one or two of the panels, or even hand paint an age number or monogram onto the top of the middle section of the motif.
