Snake Cake Tutorial



**The only step not captured was when I used a plastic webbing material to make the scales impression on the fondant. I tried using avocado and lemon bags, as has been suggested by others, but found the impression wasn't deep enough, or just didn't work well with my marshmallow fondant, but then I found some firmer mesh material at Whole Foods (at the fish counter of all places-- they gave me a clean/new piece of the mesh they sit the fish on in the display case!)  I rubbed the impression onto the fondant after it was on the cake, since I knew I'd never be able to retain the imprint if I did it before hand, especially with so many crevices to press/smooth the fondant into on the cake. Some areas didn't hold the impression well, but I found that after it was painted with food coloring, I could press the mesh into the wet 'paint' and it'd pull off enough of the food coloring to help the impression appear more defined.  Not perfect, but good enough.  It obviously worked best against the very hard head because it was made of rice krispies treats, not soft cake.

thanks for the kudos!  It was one of those things I always wanted to try.  I don't remember exact sizes I used for the cake, but I think it was a two-layer 8" round for the base, and two 6" rounds for the upper swirls. If I had to do it again, I'd definitely go bigger on the bottom cake so that the swirls were more dramatic and separate.  As for how it stayed together, I cut a section out of the 8" base for the 6" round swirl part (you can kinda see it in that 5th picture), and then treated it like a topsy-turvy cake by putting supports in the base cake, and putting a board in the carved out section, under the 6" swirl, then put a dowel through the 6" down into the 8" base.  I think I may have also put a bubble tea straw or two on an angle through that side swirl cake as well, to hold it securely, because I feared as it settled the fondant would tear at the seams.  I should also mention that since I knew I'd be doing a messy-ish pattern, and the scales impression, that I covered it in panels/strips as opposed to covering it with one large piece.  Oh, and I also added more of a 'tip' to the tail at my husband's suggestion, so that it could pull away from the cake more on the board.  That extra tip was done with cake paste-- a mix up of cake scraps and icing.
