Birthday Cake for Pups

This is a recipe I cobbled together from cookbooks and the internet and my own knowledge of baking. I made this for my friend Bruiser who turned 10 this year! He and his sister Kelly went absolutely @CRAZY@ for this cake. It was so much fun.

Birthday Cake for Pups

Ingredients

  • ~Birthday Cake for Pups~
  • 1 1/2 cups wheat flour (all-purpose is OK too)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup soft butter
  • 1 small jar baby food, meat- I used veal with veggies
  • 3Êeggs- I use egglands best lowÊcholesterolÊ
  • 2 strips dog beef jerky or just use bacon bits
  • ~ Cream Cheese Frosting ~

  • 8Êounces nonfat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1Êteaspoons honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

Instructions

  1. ~Birthday Cake for Pups~
  2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour one 6″ pan and 4-5″ pan (I used a mini springform). Cream butter until smooth. Add baby food, and eggs. Mix until smooth.
  3. Mix dry ingredients into beef mixture until batter is smooth. Crumble beef jerky and fold into batter. Pour batter into pans. Bake 40 minutes or until done.Ê It will be more like the feel of pressing on a quick bread than a cake.Ê This is VERY dense.Ê Cool on wire rack 15 minutes. Ice with recipe below.
  4. If you are serving 1-2 dogs I suggest using the 4″ cake.Ê 3-4 dogs serve the 6″ cake.Ê More than that- stack them up and use them both.
  5. Store unused cake in the freezer.Ê I find that they keep very well and no dog has complained about frozen cake yet!
  6. Store uneaten cake in refrigerator.
  7. ~ Cream Cheese Frosting ~
  8. Beat with a mixer until fluffy.Ê
  9. Cinnamon variation: To the above recipe, add 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.
  10. Mmmm Mmmm Good! And if you use real bacon you can try a bite too! Enjoy!

My dogs loved this cake. Good thing is it is quite chewy, so they couldn't just scarf it down - they had to work on it. The bad thing - it smelled quite . . . meaty. LOL
